Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information The Caterer (the game at play.legacyoffolktales.com) collects, why, who helps us handle it, and the choices and rights you have. We collect as little as we can to run the game, save your progress, and understand how people play.
- You can play the first three chapters without giving us anything personal.
- To keep playing, we ask for your name and email so we can save your progress and send you a link to continue. News from Legacy of Folktales is a separate, optional box.
- We use Google Analytics to see how people play. In the UK, the EU and Switzerland it stays off unless you say yes. Everywhere else you can turn it off at any time, and we honor Global Privacy Control.
- We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t share it for targeted advertising.
Who we are
The Caterer is made by Legacy of Folktales (“we”, “us”). We are the controller of the personal information described here. Contact us about anything in this policy at [email protected].
What we collect
When you sign in after Chapter Three
- Your name and email address.
- A Patreon code, if you enter one, so we can tell supporters apart.
- Where you are in the story and a link that restores your progress.
- Whether you ticked the news box.
- At that moment we also note the time, your approximate location (city, region and country, worked out from your IP address by our host; we don’t store the IP address itself with your sign-in), and your device type and browser.
While you play
- Your progress and choices are saved on your own device (in your browser’s storage) so you can continue later.
- Anonymous choice counts. To show lines like “61% of players stopped for her,” we record which choice was made against a random ID created on your device. It isn’t linked to your name or email. In the UK, the EU and Switzerland this only happens if you’ve said yes to analytics.
- Analytics (if on): pages and chapters reached, choices made, endings, shares and sign-ups, plus the device, browser, and approximate location information Google Analytics collects. Google signals and ad personalization are turned off, and IP addresses are not stored in Google Analytics.
Technical information
Our host, Cloudflare, processes your IP address and basic request information to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.

Who helps us
These service providers process information on our behalf, under contracts that limit what they can do with it:
- Cloudflare: hosting, security, and the database that stores sign-ins and anonymous choice counts.
- Google (Google Analytics): analytics, only as described above.
- MailerLite: sending your continue link and, if you opted in, our newsletter.
- Airtable: our sign-in records.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights or someone’s safety. If Legacy of Folktales is ever sold or merged, this information could transfer with it under this policy.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral (targeted) advertising.
International transfers
We and our providers are based in the United States and other countries. When information about people in the UK, the EU or Switzerland is transferred, it is protected by the safeguards the law requires, such as the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework and its UK and Swiss extensions where a provider is certified, or standard contractual clauses (with the UK addendum).
How long we keep it
- Sign-in records: as long as you have an account with us, then up to 24 months after your last activity, unless you ask us to delete them sooner.
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe.
- Anonymous choice counts: kept as totals.
- Google Analytics data: 14 months.
Your rights in the UK, the EU and Switzerland
You can ask to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your information. You can also ask us to restrict how we use it, object to uses based on legitimate interests, and withdraw consent at any time (this won’t affect anything done before). Email [email protected]. We’ll respond within one month. You can also complain to a data protection authority: in the UK the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk), or the authority where you live in the EU.
Your rights in the United States
Depending on your state (including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon and others with consumer privacy laws), you may have the right to:
- know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, and get a copy;
- correct it, or delete it;
- opt out of the sale of personal information, sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising, targeted advertising, and profiling. We don’t do any of these, but you can still turn analytics off with Your privacy choices;
- not be discriminated against for using these rights;
- appeal our decision if we deny a request (reply to our decision to start an appeal).
We honor Global Privacy Control: if your browser sends it, analytics stays off. To make a request, email [email protected]. We’ll verify it’s you by confirming the email address on file. You can also use an authorized agent.
California notice
In the last 12 months we have collected: identifiers (name, email, IP address, a random device ID); internet or other electronic activity (gameplay and analytics events); and approximate geolocation (city, region, country). We collect it from you and your device, for the purposes listed above. We disclose it only to the service providers listed above. We have not sold or shared it, and we do not use sensitive personal information.
Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link, and we honor it promptly, as the CAN-SPAM Act and UK/EU rules require.
Children
The Caterer is a horror story for teens and adults. It is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you’re under 16 in the UK or EU, please ask a parent or guardian before signing in. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we’ll delete it.
Security
We use reputable providers, encrypted connections (HTTPS), and signed cookies, and we limit who can see sign-in records. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll tell you in the game or by email.
